REVIEW OF SEMINAR - Updated June 2012:
On June 2, 2012, Textile Exchange and Solidaridad successfully co-hosted a one day seminar in Bangladesh in cooperation with Control Union. Over 240 attendees representing the whole value chain came to the sold-out event to learn about key sustainability issues and solutions. Sustainability education is still an emerging topic in the second largest exporters of textile products in the world. It is however a very relevant challenge to tackle if the Bangladeshi textile industry wants to pursue growth in the coming period. The lack of infrastructure, over-population and subsequent strain on natural resources makes this an area full of potential for improvements. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive with requests for Textile Exchange and Solidaridad to return to Dhaka next year with more information.

SEMINAR OVERVIEW
Brands and Retailers are becoming increasingly concerned about the circumstances under which their products are made. In addition to social conditions in factories, environmental aspects are now receiving more and more attention as well. Increased interest in textile sustainability from raw materials selection to more sustainable production practices is a lasting trend. Topics receiving increasing attention include waste generation, effluent emissions, efficient utilization of resources such as water and energy, the substitution of hazardous chemicals and restricted substances in final products.
This seminar will address many of the concerns that affect the textile industry and update you on recent developments globally.
While organic cotton remains a vital element in the sustainable sourcing strategies of brands, they are also looking at other raw materials including different cotton options, recycled fibers, as well as cellulosic fibers. There is also an increased interest in reducing the environmental footprint of wet processes, including cleaner production, the use of more sustainable chemicals and the development of innovative and efficient technologies. These are the 2 areas of textile sustainability we will be focusing on during this seminar.
All of these issues are beginning to impact brands and retailers sourcing decisions and countries that respond to these concerns have a better chance of building their competitive differentiation.
Learn from national and international experts about a range of different topics including preferred fibers choices, certification and labeling, responsible wet processing options and cleaner production, as well as RSL management.
Bangladesh has been chosen as a key manufacturing country. We believe that we can actively assist Bangladeshi manufacturers to respond to the new trends impacting on the sourcing decisions of the brands and help to position these manufacturers to take full competitive advantage of the changes taking place.
