We C&Are – Organic cotton, an investment in our future
At C&A we view the shift to organic cotton as an essential task. We are fully committed to expanding the use of organic cotton in our products and to generate consumer awareness of this important issue. Our sales of more than 80 million articles of clothing made from organic cotton in 2012 clearly illustrate that we are well on track to achieve our goal, which positively contributes to the environment without extra cost to our customers. A milestone is set for 2020, when C&A plans to convert its entire range of cotton clothing to sustainably produced cotton.

To meet our ambitions, the most important measure is the transition from a high to a lower impact production system. For C&A, this means continuing to strengthen our commitment to sustainable agriculture and to advance the converting of certified organic cultivation methods in cotton-growing regions. Through the impressive track record with the joint project in India by C&A, Textile Exchange and the Shell Foundation, all parties committed to establishing an independent enterprise — “CottonConnect Global” – to transfer the organic cultivation methods to other specified regions. C&A also signed a contract with Cotton made in Africa (CmiA) in late 2011 to help African farmers find a long-term way out of poverty.
In addition to measurable improvements to the livelihoods of farmers and their families, a changeover to an organic agriculture has advantages at many levels – environmental, social and economic:
· Elimination of chemical usage
· Conservation of essential resources
· Achievement of better water balance and better levels of water sequestration
· Expansion in protective measures and regenerations schemes for affected ecosystems
· Attraction of existing and new customers through a new sustainable product range
All theses advantages drive our belief in organic cotton at C&A.
