Silk has been used widely by royalty and commoners for centuries due to its soft hand, elegant drape, warmth retention, and tensile strength. Silk primarily comes from silkworms which are fed mulberry leaves and spin approximately 1 mile of filament and completely encloses themselves in cocoons over about two to three days. One cocoon contains approximately 1,000 yards of silk filament. There are over 30 countries producing silk today - China is the largest producer, followed by India and Japan.
