THE HISTORY OF THE PFM BENCHMARK PROGRAM

TE began annual collection of organic cotton production and consumption data in 2005, over a decade ago, for the Organic Cotton Market Report (OCMR). Analysis on trends, challenges, opportunities, and recommendations for the Industry started way back then.

In 2010, with the help of 73bit, TE transitioned its data collection process to Probench (an IT platform customized for the Corporate Responsibility Index by Business In The Community – an initiative of the Prince’s Responsible Business Network in the UK). Probench also powers other global indices such as the Access to Nutrition Index (funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Wellcome Trust and the the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation) and Principles for Responsible Investment (supported by UNEP Finance Initiative and the UN Global Compact)

Two years later, in line with TE’s expanding remit to cover a wider portfolio of Preferred Fiber and Materials (PFM), the benchmark program expanded to include recycled polyester, lyocell and certified down.

In 2015, at the request of stakeholders and with the generous support from Tchibo and C&A Foundation, we built on the existing survey to create a more holistic framework to help companies systematically measure, manage and integrate PFM strategy into mainstream operations.

In 2016, TE overhauled the program to enhance user functionality and value by introducing PFM modules as well as a a scoring methodology for the reporting of PFM Index Results.
