Job Summary 

In May 2022, Textile Exchange released ‘The Sustainability of Biosynthetics’ report which serves as a starting point for the industry to guide and educate around biosynthetic materials.  We know that further work is needed in this area, and this report is only the beginning of the journey.  Textile Exchange wishes to build on this report and further deep dive into this up-and-coming material area of synthetics.   

Textile Exchange wishes to hire a short-term contractor to support the synthetics team in answering important questions which have been raised from the outcomes of this report.  A key conclusion from the work highlighted that currently, available solutions (at a limited scale) are using partially biobased materials and that a transition towards 100% biobased materials is needed.  Furthermore, an exploration into the full market potential of biosynthetics from now and looking out to 2030 is critical in helping to drive towards Climate+ goals and targets.  Alongside this, taking into consideration what barriers and opportunities exist is important in providing a clear picture of actionable steps the industry can take within the next 2-5 years in order to develop and drive the adoption of biosynthetic materials. 

Duties and Responsibilities 

In order to drive uptake and action in this material category, the questions below cover the areas which need further work and consideration.  The work should provide a report which details answers to these key areas: 

  • How do we transition the industry to mobilize towards 100% biobased materials?   
  • What are the key actions and steps that need to be taken? 
  • How do we develop 100% biobased materials? 
  • What is the market potential of biosynthetics in the future?   
  • By 2030, where can the industry get to in terms of uptake of biosynthetic materials? 
  • What is needed from the supply chain to implement and scale-up biosynthetics? 
  • What will be the barriers and opportunities in moving biosynthetics forwards?   
  • What do different parts of the supply chain need to do in order to best prepare? 
  • What actions can be taken now?  And in the next 2-5 years? 

The role will report (virtually) to the synthetics fiber lead on a weekly basis.  The deliverables of this short-term contract work are as follows: 

  • Conduct research (primary and secondary) in the area of biosynthetics to deep dive into the above-discussed questions and provide weekly updates to the synthetics lead on progress and findings. 
  • Deliver a draft report for review and feedback, 5 weeks prior to the end date. 
  • Deliver a final report on the specified due date. 

Minimum Experience and Qualifications  

  • Degree in Textiles, Environmental Studies or Chemistry preferred.  
  • Open to 0-3 years of relevant job experience. 
  • Understanding and experience of the biosynthetic fiber category is preferred.  
  • Interest in the fashion and textile industry required and experience preferred.  
  • Well-organized and able to conduct self-directed research.  
  • Detail-oriented, logical, and systematic.   
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively.  
  • Demonstrated interest in Textile Exchange’s vision, mission, and goals.   
  • Ability to work in a flexible, yet fast-paced remote environment, able to meet deadlines and share progress regularly.   
  • Strong work ethic and self-motivation with the ability to work remotely effectively.  

Employment Package  

  • Reports to: Fiber and Materials Strategy Lead: Synthetics 
  • Part-time: 10 hours per week, a total of 15 weeks 
  • Location: Virtual/Remote, all locations 
  • Salary Range: $35 per hour 
  • Start Date: As Soon as Available
