Job Summary

Impact tools at Textile Exchange are comprised of the Preferred Fiber and Materials Matrix (PFM Matrix) and the Global Fiber Impact Explorer (GFIE).  Leveraging data, technology, research, and UX, our impact tools are designed to support the uptake of preferred fibers and materials and enable brands to improve their raw material supply chains.

The Preferred Fiber and Materials Matrix (PFM Matrix) is Textile Exchange’s tool for holistic assessment of preferred materials in the textile industry. The PFM Matrix integrates qualitative and quantitative data related to providing the user with an understanding of the impacts and risk areas of raw materials and fibers used within the apparel and footwear industry. The tool is intended to enable informed decisions related to materials and to guide the direction of travel for improvements in material production impacts in line with Textile Exchange’s Climate+ goals.

Textile Exchange recently acquired the Global Fiber Impact Explorer tool (GFIE), gifted by tool creators Google and WWF. The GFIE assesses fiber portfolio risks and hotspots by region and by fiber type across key categories: air pollution; forestry; biodiversity; climate; and water. The GFIE tool utilizes a combination of data sources, including the UN, the WHO, the Google Earth Engine Data Catalog, and others. Through the tool, users are able to see the most significant risk hot spots in their supply chain by impact area and across the materials and regions, they source.

We are looking for 3-4 full-time contract hires to support the next phase of development of our impact tools.  Interns and contractors will have the opportunity to support the essential evolution of these tools for industry release.  Support needs range from content research to technical development of the tool which includes data cleaning, algorithm testing, and modeling. Specific roles and responsibilities will be finalized for each hire depending on skillset and interest. The project objectives below will be divided across the team and are divided across three core workstreams: updates to the PFMM methodology and assessments, technical execution and de-bugging of the GFIE, and recommended actions for the GFIE.

See below the specific criteria for the research assistant and data analyst areas of focus. Please specify your area of interest in your application.
