Case Study

IKEA provides home solutions to people from around the world. Buying low environmental impact products at high prices is not difficult for people with thick wallets. But this is not an option for the majority of the world’s population. At the same time, caring for the planet is an interest and responsibility of us all. IKEA wants to make more sustainable products affordable and accessible to the masses. Converting the polyester used in their productions to recycled polyester will enable IKEA to reach people in different walks of life with products made with a significantly lower carbon footprint than before.

IKEA is committed to end the dependency on virgin fossil materials and use only renewable or recycled materials by 2030. By switching from virgin polyester to recycled polyester, IKEA will contribute to lowering greenhouse gas emissions, save energy, decrease pollution of landfills and oceans and use fewer resources by turning waste into products. By the end of FY19, the overall share of sourced polyester for textile products being recycled reached 59% (compared to 24% one year earlier). IKEA is now working towards converting all polyester in their textile products to recycled polyester before the end of 2020.
