What’s unique about the work you do?
What makes our company unique is the fact that we are elevating the goals of the sustainability movement in fashion. Circular Systems is moving well beyond the industry’s goal of achieving “zero-impact” and proving to the world that it is possible to achieve beneficial impacts with The Agraloop. Designed to produce natural fiber from crop waste, while drawing down as well as sequestering carbon while regenerating soil, The Agraloop provides a range of beneficial environmental and social impacts.
How does your process differ?
1) We use crop residues as our raw materials and clean chemistry in Agraloop’s process. Example: residues from multi-purpose/food crops such as Oilseed Hemp are used as low-cost feedstocks, that would, in many cases, have just been burned. The Agraloop allows more income for farmers, better use of arable land, reduction in the amount of land/water use. 2) Bio-energy is generated to power the mill with surplus going to local communities. All water is upcycled. The only effluents are organic soil amendments that go back to farmers to regenerate the soil. These beneficial impacts are being proven with the 1st REGENERATIVE LCA already well underway. 3) Other by-products include paper/packaging, technical fiber for bio-composites, and building materials.
When will Agraloop be commercial?
In January 2020, we launched The Agraloop 1.5 pilot facility in Belgium. Here we are finally operating with clean bio-energy and in closed-loop producing Agraloop BioFibre and BioFertilizer products at commercial scale. In holiday 2020, the first Agraloop products will hit the market with a couple of major brands. The Agraloop BioFibre launch products are being produced with French Oilseed Hemp processed at our Agraloop 1.5 plant in Belgium.
What advice do you have for others?
Strive to design fashion products and production systems to go beyond zero-impact. Let’s not settle for merely “doing less-bad” with a goal of only striving for reduced impacts. This will not be enough to save the fashion industry— or humanity! Consider how, as an industry, can we fix things, how can we restore and regenerate our habitat? Know that REGENERATIVE impacts are the new goal, the high-bar set by the fashion industry, and with fashion’s influence, we can make this the most crucial trend in history, and the goal for all industry.
What’s next? What does the future hold?
The future of Circular Systems is based on global partnership, levering the deepest form of collaboration, which we call “Constructive Interference” (a physics term, syncing up of multiple waves to create a larger wave). Resiliency for CS and our industry is being created via powerful global partnerships. This combined with the licensing of CS technologies, enables decentralized/localized operations, distributed economic models, and the ability to rapidly scale the beneficial impacts that are critically needed. CS has established powerful partnerships in Europe, The America’s, and Asia that are actively working to enable the most rapid scaling and replication of The Agraloop, as well as Texloop Recycling and Orbital Yarn systems.
