Textile Exchange Certifications Impacts by COVID-19

Due to travel restrictions, on-site audits for our standards are not possible in many countries. The Textile Exchange TEam is working with certification bodies to develop solutions to maintain the credibility of our standards through this time. It is Textile Exchange’s intent that no certified company will lose their certification due to delays in auditing caused by COVID-19.

  • Textile Exchange staff are working with our certification bodies to develop solutions to maintain the credibility of our standards through this time. On-site audits – which normally provide the backbone of our assurance system – are not possible in many countries at this time. Additionally, many certification body auditors are facing travel restrictions or even quarantine due to past travel.
  • It is Textile Exchange’s intent that no currently certified company will lose their certification due to delays in auditing caused by COVID-19. We have prepared a number of options for our certification bodies based around remote auditing and extensions of scope certificates. In many cases certification bodies will be following up with an on-site audit once this becomes possible again.
  • For companies seeking certification for the first time, Textile Exchange is not offering broad exemptions. While some more limited options exist, this means that many companies – through no fault of their own – will have delays becoming certified. This will affect the Global Recycled Standard most immediately, due to the social and environmental portions of the audit. Some companies may be able to obtain RCS certification but not GRS certification at this time. Textile Exchange asks brands to take this into consideration if suppliers are unable to meet targets, and to consider accepting RCS certification in place of GRS certification if this is what suppliers are able to provide.
