Should I get certified under current standards, or wait until the Materials Matter Standard is effective?
The Materials Matter Standard will become mandatory during mid-2026.
After pilot testing and system updates this year, the final standard will be published in 2025, with both an effective and mandatory date. The effective date is set for Q1 2026, allowing voluntary audits and certification by approved bodies. The mandatory date will be at least 12 months after publication, requiring all applicable audits to follow the new standard.
The transition from the current standard to the MMS can be done through an audit with your certification body, where the new requirements for the relevant material will be audited. Therefore, you can get certified to the current standard and then transition to the MMS when it becomes mandatory.
